A Chairmaker's cheek gauge
Eric Hedberg
>At the turn of the century, chairmaker's who still used wooden seats like those on welsh/windsor's attempted to reclaim what was then a shrinking market. Fortunately, the cheeks of Americans at the turn of the century were expanding (still true today). A chairmaker would calibrate the gauge to the cheek (one side) of the user's bottom and then use it to perfectly contour each side to match their customers needs. In one celebrated case, a man with three buttocks had a custom chair built in such a manner. Todays world of computer buttocks modeling and computer driven seat contouring routers have eclipsed this once highly specialized tool. There is hope that modern tool manufacturers will revive this useful tool for modern chairmakers, but that remains to bee seen;-) Eric (Getting cheekier with age)
