Flattening Marble Plates

Jeff Spirer

>Hi all

I have 2 marble table tops about 15 x 25".

I was thinking of using them for sharpening like a granite surface plate.

Can I use some compound and rub them together to get them flat.

Anyone do this?

Any suggestions.

Also, how flat should I be looking for.

Am I wasting my time?

Check out the link. It shows an example of making a reference straight edge, but the theory can be applied to your plates.

How bad is the marble out of whack over say a 6" length? That's all you really need at any one time to sharpen. Plane sole flattening is another story...

>They are almost certainly flat enough for sharpening.

They are probably flat enough for back flattening.

They are probably not flat enough for plane sole lapping or reference work.

Given the low cost of granite surface plates, if your purpose is the first 2 I'd just use the marble as is; if your purpose is the third one, I'd buy KNOWN flat granite.

I wanted it for big plane soles.

Using a piece of glass now.

Just hate to see them go to waste.

>Personally if the marble was good looking I'd make a pair of end tables. It's just to soft to be of much use for flattening.
