Polishing backs of plane blades
Stephen in Ottawa
>Here is my problem that I'd appreciate any insight into. I routinely flatten the backs of my plane and chisel blades on abrasive paper on glass for the lower grits and waterstones for the higher grits. Now, I've never been able to get a good polish on my 8000 grit stone. The stones are flat ( I'm quite careful about that ), the blade in question now is a LN #8. It has a very nice even scratch pattern on the 800 & 4000 grits, but I can never get rid of the dull look on the 8000 grit stone. The blade is still quite sharp. I do get a nice polish if I use 1500 or 2000 grit SiC paper, but I don't like using abrasive papers and much prefer my waterstones.
How long on an average, should it take me to get the polish on the 8000 assuming I've gone from 800 to 4000 to 8000 grit waterstones?
Thanks,
- Stephen
