Hand Cut Tenons

Richard A. Gillespie, Jr.

>I just made a saw vise and decided to use hand cut tenons on it. To rip the tenon faces I used my Adria Back Saw I bought for dovetail work. The tenons were in Ash and 7/8" to 1" deep. The ripping became very tedious with that 14 tpi back saw.

Has anyone used a 20" panel saw for that purpose? I have two of them with 10 tpi and could re-file one to a rip saw.

>I don't know any reason that wouldn't work, but actually I wrote to say - nice lookin' saw vise!

Any reason you have it clamped to the bench instead of in the shoulder vise there? It looks like that crosspiece would fit ...

Yeah, sort of

>Thanks for the compliment but in reply to your question on why I hadn't clamped it in the bench vise because I hadn't thought of it. Thanks for the suggestion. I got trapped into the paradigm of clamping it the way I designed it to be clamped.

>Richard filing your dullest crosscut backsaw would work. If I were you I would start with jointing the teeth than two strokes per gullet from the same side of the saw until having completed one pass. Go easy because your file will probably try to catch until you complete the first pass. Continue filing until sharp than remove the burrs with a fine stone than make some test cuts in some scrap to see if you have enough set in your teeth. good luck John!

>John;

Are you suggesting that I re-file a back saw to a rip configuration with a courser tpi then the one I used? If so, what tpi did you have in mind?

>I made a similar saw vice based on something from Alf's website. I also have begun the base for a Bob Key type bench. Both times I had no problem using a 5 1/2 point D-8 rip saw for the cheeks. It was a bit rough but some chisel work and the Sargent equivalent to a 71 1/2 smoothed things right out.

Yup

>I've done it for carpentry grade checkouts - finish is not to the same level as a 14tpi saw, but it is quicker.

Providing that the saw's not kinked, it does cut straight.

(ps: last time I did this was about a fortnight ago, I cut a set of 4 sawhorses in scrap 3x2 - of the 8 legs, seven were accurate enough to use on the spot, only minor gaps exist, one needed a bit of paring work)

Cheers,

Andrew

>FWIW, YMMV, etc., but when I had the same problem, Back In The Day, I had Tom Law re-tooth a Diston back saw to 11 tpi rip. Much better.
