Ugly plane

Darrell in Oakville

>A bunch of us were at the Tools Of The Trade sale at the beginning of April, hanging out at Konrad's table. We were fondling those awesome Sauer & Steiner infill planes, and the topic of conversation drifted to ugly planes. One thing led to another, and pretty soon we were laughing about the potential for an aluminum and balsa infill plane.

I was cleaning up the shop on Saturday afternoon, and had to put away some sheet metal (why do people throw brass kick plates in the garbage? Fools!). So there I was, out in the garage, shoving the kickplate in behind that stack of 1/8 thick aluminum sheets, and I remembered that conversation. I picked up a hunk of aluminum, and looked over at the lumber rack. There's a nice chunk of basswood on top of the rack, and while it ain't balsa, it's as close as I can get to the exact opposite of ebony. Well, I have an afternoon to waste, a sheet of Al, and a block of basswood. I've been unable to do any work in the shop for the last week, as I've been suffering from a nasty chest cold. Now that I'm feeling better, I just want to putter in the shop.

So I wasted Saturday afternoon making this. Hideous, ain't it?

New Contest Announcement!

Don Thompson - Cutler Ridge, Florida

>Make an infill plane in 60 minutes or less! ;-)

OK, let us see the sole and the mouth, and what iron/chipbreaker did you use?

Don - who has never made any> plane.

Looks good to me

>It cut those shavings didn't it? It works so it was worth the effort and certainly not a waste of time IMO. What if you found yourself in a certain perdiciment where you needed a special plane to do a special job, well then by Jove you now know that you can make it it.

I agree that Tom Lie-Nielsen won't lose any sleep over it, but Steve Knight might! :~0

Wasn't it Ernie who made a plane out of some channel iron?

>Yep,and Ernie did a good job of it too.I have the shavings to prove it.

Course Ernie`s chariot plane took alittle longer to make I`ll bet.He must have big hands as it fits mine just right.

Thanks again Ernie.

>Those aren't trophy shavings, they're from that plane. It was tough to get a shaving that looked so good, because the plane chokes like crazy. It chatters too. And it's not particularly comfortable in use. So I guess it really is the antithesis of a Sauer & Steiner. Maybe I should give it to Konrad next time I see him eh? He'd probably freak. Not that he hasn't called me a "sick little monkey" in the past, regarding some rather off-the-wall woodworking project I had done.

>I was going to make a similar comment that while the plane might not be pretty, those shavings aren't all that bad.

Maybe if you spent some time *tuning*, you might get better results ;)
