Mortise chisels

Steve Kubien

>Hello all,

The thread (below) about Adam's mortising technique got me to thinking (don't worry, I was wearing protective head gear)... Could I take the blade from Sorby mortise chisels (bought from Lee Valley) and apply a pig-sticker-like handle and get the benefits of that style of chisel?

I don't know much about how blades are attached to the handles for chisels so I am wondering if this is possible and/or, worth the time and effort.

Thoughts? Opinions? Derogatory comments?

Thanks,

Steve Kubien

The bolsters on my Butcher's are 1-1/4 X 1-3/4".

I don't know if this matters if you not going to be wailing on them with a mallet. Both chisels are tang type so this may work to your advantage. To attach the handle, the chisel's tang is heated and burned onto a hole in the handle. Neat concept...
