Converted to Cherubuni-style mortising - long

>I made a simple gate a couple of days ago to keep the bairn away from the stairs. Functionality and strength were the key design critetria so I tenoned the rails and stles together. I took the opportunity to compare the usual whack-it-with-a-mallet method with Adam Cherubuni's push-it-with-your-shoulder method of chopping mortices.
I chopped two mortices with a sharp, straight-sided (i.e. no bevelled edges) chisel that has a socketed and hooped handle - sometimes described as a "sash mortise chisel". Tap gently to start then WHACK, WHACK, WHACK with a mallet followed by lever and pry. Repeat a few times and I was pleased with the resulting mortice.
Then I put away the mallet away and followed Adam Cherubuni's instructions for paring and pushing to make another two mortices. What a dreadful way to work! The hooped handle was all wrong for pushing and the whole process just seemed designed to waste time and raise my frustraton levels. The mortices still turned out OK though, which indicated to me that Adam Cherubuni may be on to something good and the fault could be with me.
Then I picked up another sharp, straight-sided chisel, with blade deeper than it is wide, a tang, a bolster and no hoop on its beefy oval handle - sometimes described as a "pig sticker mortice chisel". I followed Adam Cherubuni's instructions to the letter as I pared, pushed, levered and pried chips out of another two mortices.
WOW ! It works really well.
I had far more control over the whole procedure and the resulting mortices seemed better than the previous four, with smoother and straighter sides. The difference seemed to be in both the technique and the chisel. A pig sticker makes Cherubuni's push-it-with-your-shoulder method easy and comfortable. More importantly, the combination of the right method with the right tool gets a better result (for me anyway) than wailing away on a chisel with a mallet.
I thoroughly recommend the Cherubuni method to anyone who hasn't tried it yet. You're likely to be very pleasantly surprised by how easy and effective it is. Now I'll be scouring the sales and auctions for a few more sizes of pig stickers to replace my motley collection of sash mortice chisels.
