>Looking over Craigslist.org for the area this morning I noticed a nice looking set-up for the guy with room and a passion for a certain kind of sharpening. Says it's located in Salem, Oregon. I think it's a steal for $50.

I have no connections with nor interest in the seller. It's just that forty years ago I got to go in the backroom at George & Son in downtown Portland to watch "Son", now an old man (if alive), freehand a pristine edge on a big Henry Taylor gouge I'd purchased. He used a huge (maybe four feet in diameter) slow turning wheel in a water bath.

Anyway, take a look at the reducer/bearing unit alongside the wheel center. Anyone happen to know if this was something manufactured for this purpose alone?

>If your asking what I think you are, 90 degree gear reduction boxes are pretty common in industry. The slightly tricky part would be getting a coupling to mate to the old shaft in the wheel. Best place would be old machinery scrap yards. Even a good used Reeves drive unit could be adapted for that use.
