Chisel making

Svante Nilsson

>Hi,

A year ago a friend and I bought a 4 mm A2 steel bar from Uddeholm. We ripped the bar into 3, 6, 12, and 18 mm with a metal band saw. The tang was formed with hack saw and power grinder. After hardening we lapped the chisels.

I made simple handles in ash and drilled 4 or 5 mm holes to accomodate the tang. The chisels were then mounted according to the "smoke and fire" method. I got best result by heating the tang to moderate temperatures. In some cases it was not possible to enter the whole tang. Than I just re-heat the tang. One occation the tang was too hot and the handle got miscolored by smoke.

These chisel are made for paring and have an angle between 20 and 25 degrees. I have not pushed the limits yet but they seems to work fine.

Thanks for looking,

Svante

>Got to agree with Jim they do look nice. Only thing I suggest is to go with a more rounded handle to make them look a bit sleeker, and possibly be more comfortable in the hand. Coarse, that's your choice.

Tell us more about your heat-treating process.

How much $$$ would you say you have wrapped up in this set of chisels?

Nice job, and questions

>They look very good Svante. How long are the blades and the handles? They look like butt chisle length to me.

I'll take a set of the skews please.

>Hi,

The handles are quite long, 11 cm (4,5"). I started with 9 cm handles but for pairing they were to short. The long blades are 13 cm (5"), the shorter 7,5 cm (3").

I made some tests yesterday and, compared to the Japaneese bench chisel I have, they are a bit easier to control and give a better surface when pairing.

Costs for material, hardening, ripping the bars and surface grinding are 250 USD. As we were two, my share was 125 USD.

Next project will be bench chisels. I have not decided if I should use A2 or CPV steel....

Svante
