LN Chairmaker's Tool Kit DVD

Greg Btit, Vergennes, VT

>Lie-Nielsen's new Brian Boggs DVD arrived from back order yesterday. I was surprised to see Brian using and sharpening some tools that I hadn't seen before- two new spokeshaves and a travisher.

The travisher is a bronze beauty. I emailed Brian Boggs to ask about it, and he forwarded my email to Thomas Lie-Nielsen, who said that they plan on being in production with it this summer.

He also offered that they had just finished the patterns on the curved soled spoke shave. In the DVD it matched the two Boggs spoke shaves LN has in their catalog, some very nice tools.

The third new shave I saw in the DVD(which I regretfully didn't ask about) was a (curly maple) wooden "razor" spoke shave. The design is similar to Lee Valley's low angle spoke shave, only the blade is held in by two screws from the bottom (instead of the knurled nuts on the top). Although it is adjustible up and down, I didn't see where the front piece could be turned around to enable the shave to negotiate concave work as the LV one does, though. The one Brian Boggs used in the DVD was gorgeous.

Spy shots?

Eric Hedberg

>Are they posting any teasers of the new tools anywhere or do you have to do a rip and paste to get one? Sounds like the nonlinear woodworkers are finally getting some attention in the new toys department. By the way, hows the Boggs DVD? Eric

The DVD- initial impressions

Greg Btit, Vergennes, VT

>I have not watched the DVD from front to back yet, but I have looked at at least some of all the sections in it. Brian Boggs demonstrates using a draw knife, three variations of spoke shaves, and a travisher. He uses both the shaving horse and a workbench in the demos. He spends some time discussing the design of the unique shaving horse he uses, as well as the advantages of the shaving horse over the bench for the chair pieces he's working.

He also demonstrates sharpening all the tools mentioned. One interesting idea he demonstrated was clamping the diamond hone in the shaving horse and sharpening the draw knife using the same motions you use when you're slicing wood with it. He freehand grinds a concave shave blade. He uses diamond paste on a maple block to hone everything. He uses a ~3" diameter steel pipe to hone the bevel of the concave blade.

I like what I have seen, but like I said, I haven't watched the full DVD yet.

>I enjoyed watching the new Brian Boggs video and learned a thing or two. It was obvious to me that Brian has made many chairs and has spent many hours using and refining his tools. I thought his shaving horse was neat and I am considering building one like it. I think FWW issue 139 had an article on his shaving horse and has enough info and dimensions to build it. The new LN-Boggs tools were a surprise to me and my only disappointment was that I wished Brian would have spent a little time on using/tuning other brands or vintage tools. He did compare a vintage Witherby draw knife with the LN one. This DVD has a lot to offer and I would highly recommend it.

Here's how to get plans *LINK*

Eric Hedberg

>Paul, Country Workshops offers the plans for the Boggs design of a shaving horse. The link is below. If you haven't checked out the one offered by Lee Valley take a look at that one on their site. I recently built the Lee Valley version and am in the process of tuning it up to my needs. I like the "low bench" feature for working on the seats. I like the Boggs design, too and it was a toss up which one to build (first;-). Eric

Still would like a peek at the travisher

>I tried hard to snag a shot from the DVD using screen shots or Snagit- but the .jpg's came out blank and the .bmp's wouldn't post.

The tool is bronze, and has high gull wing handles- not quite as upright as what you might picture on a wooden travisher, such as the one Scott Perry posted a week or so ago. There is plenty of sole up in front of the cutter, and the sole is (fairly gently) curved both fore-and-aft, and abeam.

One thing that sets it apart from a traditional travisher is the cap iron. Brian Boggs points out that this feature enables a little better against-the-grain performance than the traditional travisher, which is handy when scooping out seats as the geometry transitions from downhill to uphill.

Did I mention that it is a *very* nice looking tool?

Greg- who wishes he could have cut a shot from the DVD in in pause...

Can you save the bmp so that you can get it again?

Dan Donaldson

>If you can, then it should be possible to get it converted. If you cannot get anything else to work, e-mail me the bmp and I will fix it up and post it for you.

>received DVD yesterday and it's a nice summary of these chairmaking tools and shows the potential of them. It all seems to be easy, but don't forget: BB is using greenwood.

And of course it's promoting the BB/LN tools ; so you pay for the

promo ;-)

About the sharpening: the tools don't have to be as sharp as tools for KD wood; most important is the right bevel.

For a beginning greenwoodworker: Do a course and buy the books of Drew Langsner and Mike Abbott.
