Folks we met on the Wet Coast Road Trip

Doug Evans

>Hi Folks:

We're back form one of the most grueling Road Trips we have ever undertaken. It all began for Ben in San Diego, CA on March 29th and a few days later, I headed out to Rochester (Rochester WW Guild), NY and then on to Saratoga (NE WW's Club). ON Monday April 4, I caught up with Ben in LA and we continued on up the coast until we arrived in Seattle, WA. We arrived back home on April 17 - what a tour!

Along the way we met a number of people during build sessions and talks and in addition, a number of people in the business.

Here's a picture of Fred Damson of Japan WW.

>Ah, so it was a Fishing Trip! Well, Ok then. We sorely missed your lively banter at the Tools of The Trade Show, not to mention your wares. We consoled ourselves by torturing Doug Orr instead (insert evil grin).

I'm Sorry I missed it...

Doug Evans

>Hi Daryll:

I think that's the first Pickering Tools of the Trades I have missed. I almost could have done it, had it not been for the need to sleep.

Hope to see you all in the fall.

Cheers,

Doug

>I was happy to meet Ben when he did his swing through San Diego. I built a shoulder plane in the build that he held here, but I still haven't completed all of the final finishing steps. It's over 95% done though! Sorry I don't have any pictures yet!

This went much easier than my last attempt. I tried to build a Shepherd thumb plane and made a mess of the attempt. I posted about my mess about a year ago in the link below.

The shoulder plane went together wonderfully by comparison. I think this was a combination of 1) I was a little more careful this time and 2) there is so much more wood between the sidewalls that damaging the wood by beating too hard is almost impossible.

So thanks Ben for helping me escape from the exclusive club of ham-fisted morons who could not build one of your planes. I'm much happier in the company of all the other people who succeeded.

Wendell @ Murphy, TX

>The big questions Paul now, are you going to build the smoother you want from a kit or still look to someone else to build it?

>Hi Wendell,

I got a fantastic Knight 50 degree smoother for Xmas. I'm all set in the smoother department.

I'm only peripherally a member of the infill club. ;-)
