Saturday's work--happy planes

jimreed@tallahassee

>Here is a shot of Saturday afternoon's efforts. The #95 arrived without a blade holder and without a blade. The #140 was rusty and had no blade. After a few hours in the shop, I have a new blade holder and two new blades ready for the heat treating batch. The once sad planes are happy now.

>Jim,

Do you heat treat the blades yourself or send them out to someone?

What type of steal do you use? A2? O1? ?

If you send them out, how many blades in a batch? and who? what do they charge?, will they take small batches from woodworkers?

Thanks

Heat treating

Jim Reed @Tallahassee

>My heat treater charges a minimum and is not very economical for small batches.

Great job & a question.

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>How did you make the blade holder for the 95? Look like a modified 78 hold down to me. Again, nice work.

You have sharp eyes

Jim Reed @Tallahassee

>The orphan 78 holder was just just perfect. I chopped it down and ground a bevel on the end.

Happy Planes

>Aye, but there's nothing more gratifing than to put an old soldier back into the battle eh?

When I finish rescuing a plane/tool and start it back into cutting wood and like to beleive that the tool is saying "Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh this feels sooooooooooooooo niiiiiiiiice", and that somewhere, in the Great Workshop in the Sky some old-timer is grinning from ear to ear! Well, that's silly me for ya anyhow.

Wonder what you other Tool Rescuers think and feel when you've brought back a tool from the brink of Death.

Good Show Jim, and enjoy them often.
