How would you sell?

Ernie Miller Topeka

>A busted in half Henery Disston saw? It is the one with the eagle medallion head pointing to the left. Basicaly it is only good for the medallion and the split nuts. as the handle has some issues also. It's an 8 poing X cut. The 5 point rip is in much better shape. would you leave it all together or just list the nuts and medallion? And to top it all off I got thrown out of a garage sale this morning? $60 #5's!

I think...

>He got thrown out because he told the seller where to put a $60.00 No.5 ;^)

I can hear him now...Hey, I've been thrown out better places than this before...

>They had alot of planes priced real high. A friend fello tool dealer shows up all excited because I don't have it all in my hands figuring I didn't have the cash to cover it all. I tell him not to waist his time looking as every thing is 3-4 times ebay prices including shipping. as I'm leaving a lady is looking at a chandeleer and I ask her if it would help if held it up for her. with a $20 price I told her it was probably the only thing here with a reasonable price and worth it if she wanted it. then the guy working the sale told me if I wasn't buying it was time to leave. So I ask him if he had any wood chisels. He replies I though you were leaving. By that time my friend was busting a gut. Laughing at me.

This is no help.... but

>It puts me in mind of a heading I saw on eBay for a saw - very succinct and accurate - but it had my wife rolling on the floor. The heading read "Henry Disston, split nuts, no sons" My wife thought she had identified the problem with the "no sons" part until I explained what it meant.

>If they want them nuts and medallions bad enough--yes.

I suppose Ernie could break off the blades just in front of the handles and list just the handles for the hardware.

>I think on an older saw like this i would just list what you have and not take the blade apart. With these split nut saws always a danger of messing up the nuts when you take it apart. While back I saw and older Disston that was obvious to me at least that had been drasstically shortened sell for a fairly high price The seller had an interesting blurb that the initials HD under the handle stood for Henry Disston who no doubt made it himself. No comment on this.....If your saw was a more modern one I would advise to take the handle off and sell it with the nuts if in good condition.Interestingly the few times I have tried to sell nice old split nut handles ,[from backsaws] they didn't do as much as a more modern and common handle like a D8 thumbhole. I think the reason is there are less bidders looking for these old handles then are guys with newer saws that need to be rehabbed.......Todd
