Scraper plane problem

Mike-in-Havertown

>Hello all,

I got a LV scraper plane a little while ago and just had the opp. to use it. I am having problems getting it to move well. It seams like one corner of the blade keeps catching (maybe I should round them over) and there is alot of chatter.

Is there a different techique for scraper planes? I followed the directions in blade set up and pre-use maintence.

>Mike,

There was an excellent recent thread on the "UKworkshop.co.uk" Forum Index -> Hand Tools forum posted on March 14, 2005 titled "Scraper Plane Help". Rob Lee from LV posted some excellent guidance. The person that started the thread ("Philly") seems to be an amiable soul and might provide some additional support via email.

Good Luck!

>Try retracting the blade and easing the camber. Place the plane on a flat surface with a piece of paper with thickness similar to an index card under the toe. Then lower the blade so the blade sits flat on the surface and try the plane out!

I have an LV scraper and an L-N 85 that I set up this way and both work beautifully (bear in mind the blade still needs prepared).

>Wow, what a great resource. I printed the instructions that Rob suggested and I am going to give them a try tonight.

I was wondering if the 15 degrees was too aggressive, but since it was in the instructions I thought it was me the newbie to hand tools.

Thanks Thomas.

>Hi Mike -

Got to this thread late - but will be glad to help you out if you still have problems....!

Scraping is a fuction where tactile feedback helps a lot - and using a scraper plane (anyone's) will insulate you from that direct feedback. You have to rely on knowing what's going on, instead of feeling it.

A few things to consider - burnish at lower angles until you've got experience..., and don't apply too much pressure when burnishing (a common problem)...

Cheers -

>Hi All

Yes, I had a few problems getting mine to work consistently-Rob was kind enough to give me a few pointers.

Biggest problem is the burr-go for 5 degrees (or even no burr-just sharpen the blade like a plane iron) An aggresive burr catches and moves the blade out of position. Remember that it is not a regular plane-very light shavings are all you should be taking!

Hope this helps you get the best out of your scraper plane. And its always nice to have you Folk over on our forum for a chat!

cheers
