Po6tential Retraction Forthcoming

>In the thread below concerning Gerry's bowed chisels I stated that on my oilstones I could only get my chisel backs up "frosted mirror" quality and not to nose hair counting reflection quality. Well this morning I worked on one of my "frosted mirrors" and made dramatic improvements to it. While still not quite up to nose hair counting quality it is real close.

For initial flattening I use the coarsest side of those double sided cheap-o carborundum stones than go to my Medium (Washita?) Arkansas stone, than to my Fine, than my Extra Fine.

What I did differently this morning was to go from the coarsest side of the carborundum to the finer side, than to my Medium, Fine, Extra Fine. Sure made a big difference and I think with a bit more time spent on either the finer side of the carborundum or the Medium will do it. We'll see in a day or so. Could'nt spend more time working the chisel as I had to change the starter on my S-10 which ended up taking 5 hours and help from a buddy. What a nightmare of a job, but we got it done and it works great!

>Hi Todd,

I'll post over here because the other thread is pretty far down. I just wanted to mention that I've seen two "studies" with a microscope (one done by a friend the other was by Brent Beach I believe) that found that a frosty surface didn't affect sharpness. In fact one actually found a better edge on the frosty blade compared to the one with a mirror finish.

Just a thought.
