I wouldn't worry too much about technique. They're not exactly precision tools. So long as they cut who cares.

I score the piece to be cut with the saw then back off. Then I drill a through hole on the circumference of the cut with a reasonably large bit. This gives the swarf somewhere to go and reduces the burning somewhat. You will have to blow it occasionally as it will fill up.

In Leonard Lee's book, "The Complete Guide to Sharpening," he says to sharpen hole saws just as you would a rip saw. (He covers it in the section on drill bits.)
If you don't have this book in your library, I join a host of others in recommending it highly. I've learned more about sharpening more different tools since buying this book than in 5 decades before.
