My 1 hour spoon that took 3 hours...

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>So I decided to join in the merry-making. Actually I found that I kinda enjoy carving. : )

Here is the before picture with the clock showing the start time.... The wood is a hunk of air dried beech that I had. Most of our wooden spoons are beech, so I figured it would be a good choice...The 1/3C measuring cup is the one I usually make pancakes with.

20 minutes later

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>Here it is with the bowl roughed out. You can see by the clock that 20 minutes has elapsed and I'm thinking "I can do this in an hour..." Yeah, right (G). I used my only carving chisel - a buck bros 1/2" out cannal gouge.

My spoon at 35 minutes

>OK so now I'm beginning to see it'll take longer than an hour...

My spoon at 1 hour

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>Well, one hour has elapsed and you *could* pour a pancake with it, but I'm going to put some more time into it...

The hardest part is holding it!

Finished spoon 3 hours

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>So with a little rasping, a little sawing, a little more rasping, some drawknife work, spokeshave work, some more rasping, scraping and sanding - voila! a spoon that I could buy at IKEA for $10!

Tools used for my 3 hour spoon

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>Missing from the picture is the D-8 rip saw used to rough out the handle. What I could really have used was a good bow saw. I think I may make one, 'cause now I *need* one. THat and a shaving pony. The #49/#50 rasps were a lifesaver. My spokeshaves are too wide to get at the tight curves. I finished it with garnet shellac and a coat of butcher block wax.

I plan on taking it on its maiden voyage Saturday morning. It holds between a 1/4 and 1/3 cup. Thanks to all who have contributed to this challenge. It was fun!

Pam: I think you need a separate category for coolest clock timing the event. Sandor wins hands down in my opinion.

>Good work! You did a great job of fairing the curves, and it looks highly functional.

Nice clock, too. ;-)

Clocks...

Sandor in Boyds, MD

>Does your fat Italian Chef sing?

My (my wife's really) Raggedy Ann clock sings

Ann: "Andy, Andy please wake up! Its time to start our day."

Andy: "OK Ann, I'm awake Lets sing it once again."

Both: "We were sent to wake you, so here we are to say: Please get up, brush your teeth and start your happy day!"

>Wow! Sandor that is one good looking spoon. It looks like the extra time made for a much nicer spoon than the couple I made. I hope you don't mind if I copy it that is a really nice design.

Tres Cool! and I even like...

Jonathan Kaplan (OR)

>The one hour version -- it has a certain insane roughness to it. Kind of a spoon, kind of a weapon, kind of something else. :)

But seriously, for 3 hours work, the final project is, to my eyes, amazing.

Man, that is the greatest spoon. Post some more of your work. I'm inspired.
