stanley rabbet plane

>I have a stanley rabbet plane but no fence or depth stop to make a rabbet I have tried several techniques such as first making a 1/4 in. groove with a 1/4 iron in my stanley 45 and then following up with the rabbet plane. This way, the shoulder is established and things go pretty well. I have also sawed a line with my back saw. I then tilted the rabbet plane and worked the line to get my shoulder started. This worked pretty well. I did notice that my blade iron on the rabbet plane extends slightly beyond the edge of the body(on the right side when holding the plane) and this tended to chew up the shoulder a bit.

What is the best/ most efficient method given the limitation of not having a fence. Also, without a depth stop is it just go slow and keep checking the depth. I will make a depth stop once I retap the weird screw hole to get to a standard size for a threaded rod or bolt. Please explain the procedure that works best for you.

Regards,

Bob

>Hi Bob - You do not give the Model No. of your Stanley Rabbet plane, but if it is a Model 78 you can purchase all of the replacement parts you mentioned at Highland Hardware (Google for on-line Catelog). The Fence, complete is $10.99.

The blade

Jim Reed @Tallahassee

>Sometimes you need to move the blade in to keep it from gouging out the shoulder. Or someone may have sharpened the edge whacky and stepped on your right angle. Fix that first by squaring the edge of the blade to the shoulder. This is an important step for a rabbet plane blade.

As for your other problems, I find the #78 easy enough to use with the depth stop and the fence, but impossible without them. It is heavy and does not like to stay upright. Find the parts and your satisfaction will soar. Good luck.

Which stanley rabbet plane?

>Mark the depth on the edge of the board with a marking gauge before you do any cutting. Then you can watch your line as you go.

The cutter ought to protrude a tiny amount on the (right) side. Too much and it will "chew up" the edge, too little and the side of the plane will interfere and the rabbet will get narrower as you go. You must learn this by trial. You might check the side of the plane with a straightedge sometime.

>The plane is a #78.I will try to pick up the fence and depth stop. Can the left or right side be used to make a rabbet? It has square sides so I would assume either work. For some reason, the blade wants to protrude beyond the body on the right side but easy to keep flush on the left side. Thanks for the help.
