>Is a shoulder vise very handy or does it just look really cool? Has anyone made their own? I have seen plans on the web.

Is a screw vise on the left side of the bench more useful if the vise is made of an acme screw nut, guide etc. rather than a plain woodworking vise mounted on the bench? How are the twin screw vises compared to a ww vise?

Thanks for your comments.

Supreme for dovetails, PIA for eveything else (IMHO)

I've considered making a "stand-alone" shoulder vise to be held in my Record #52 1/2 face vise when needed.

The "normal" face vise has greater capacity, doesn't project out into your work area, and is Q/R.

>PIA? Not my experience! I would not own a bench that didn't have a shoulder vise. I built my bench twenty years ago, and I can't tell you how many times it has proved to be useful. That being said, different strokes for different folks plays hard here. I cut many dovetails, and joint long panels. You can't beat the shoulder vise, for supporting one end of large panels.
