Another ~60 minute spoon

Paul in NJ

>I found a little time yesterday to try my hand at spoon making. I used a piece of black gum that I put away to dry a while ago but after working it a while I wished I had something more straight grained. My first choice to rough the spoon out would have been a turning saw but I don't have one so I used my hatchet to the best of my ability. This week-end warriors' forearm started to ache and cramp after a few minutes so I switched to my draw knife but that didn't work out well. The grain was too gnarly and I couldn't grip the spoon tightly enough with my shaving horse to hog off wood with my draw knife. I went back to my hatchet, being ever so careful not to amputate a few fingers, and roughed out as much as I could. My hero's were the spoke shaves. They were easy to use and gave nice results. The saw was used to cut stop cuts for the hatchet and knock off the corners of the bowl. This is my result after 65 minutes, I lost track of time towards the end.
