Better way to get Lacquer off tools

Darin in Victoria

>Well there are good and bad things about buying tools. The good part is I have 6 new Hirsch Chisels. The bad news is I have to get all the lacquer off them. Well I've gotten through three of them with mineral spirits and lots of elbow grease with the green scotchbrite pad. Had to hone them scary sharp also. Too tired to do anymore tonight. Oh yeah, I also did one of my skew chisels. So make that four tonight. Lots of work and my wife's been eyeing them because she wants to cut off some dowels from her magazine rack. Argh, all that work and I think she'll get to use them before me!

Anyways, is there anyway to get the lacquer off faster than the method that I'm using?

Lacquer Thinner

Matt in Boone Iowa

>I soaked mine in a jar of lacquer thinner for a few hours. Wiped off the lacquer that would come off. Resoaked for a little while longer and it all came off with just a little coaxing from a fine mesh finishing pad.

>I soaked mine with mineral spirits for a while. The most important thing I did was grab an old butt chisel that was too soft for good work and put it to its highest and best use which is to scrape off the lacquer from good chisels and related tasks. It took me about 6 minutes tops, probably less.

>Darin,

If you don't have any, go buy a pint of lacquer thinner. I put my Hirsch chisels in a mayonaise jar, added just enough thinner to cover the steel, and let them soak overnight. The next morning the coating sloughed off with no effort on my part; all I had to do was wipe them off.

>Hmmm... If mineral spirits worked, the coating probably wasn't lacquer. I have found MS to work fine on petroleum based coatings like cosmolene in which they coat heavy iron from overseas, but I don't think a good furniture grade lacquer should dissolve in MS, especially if you are using the odorless MS that is not nearly as hazardous to your health.
