The big latticed piece of wood, looks like end grain. Underneath it is some lighter colored wood.
I see Fig 8 as a top down view of the upper front right corner of the chest shown in Fig 9. The end grain is the top of the stile, with railes joined for the front and side of the case. The pins are visible on the front rail.
Also (I'm making my way through this article very slowly), in figure 11 is shown two riven pieces with a diagram for how the Savell shop cut stiles and most other shops cut them. Other shops apparently used a 5 sided stile to save wood. Do you know how a 5-sided stile would have been used? Where/how would they have positioned the fifth side?
Figure 23 shows a 5 sided piece in use. I can only guess what the typical position would be. I could see placing that face inward, or out depedning on what effect you wanted. Seems to work well in the example shown in Fig 23, the bottom of the chest.
