HOTDOG!

Lyn J. Mangiameli

>For those of you who have or remember the Stanley #9 Miter Plane, you know of the metal side handle fitted to the body of the plane that was affectionately known for its similarity in shape to a hotdog. I have always considered this an excellent means of gripping this rectangular bodied plane when it was used on its side for its primary intended purpose of shooting.

When Lie-Nielsen produced their outstanding modern version, in place of the hotdog, they substituted a wooden knob that could be threaded into either side of the main body. This handle is useful when a lot of force needs to be communicated into and through the plane, but most of the time it serves as a rather ungainly appendage that gives the plane an assymetrical appearance and makes storage awkward. Functionally, it moves a portion of the applied force well out of line with the blade center, which is not a big problem when used for shooting, but still less than ideal. Though a hotdog handle doesn't entirely eliminate these issues, by allowing for a grip on the body itself, it diminishes them greatly, and just looks Classic and Cool at the same time.

Thus I have longed for the return of a hotdog handle that would move the application of force closer in to the body, and allow for a comfortable grip when the plane is held off a surface. I made my request, which likely has been joined by others, to L-N many years ago. Some hope of fullfilment was extended, but the time frame was indefinite, which in this case has extended into many years.

Well, I just got off the phone with Jennifer of L-N and two HotDogs have been produced, with one now on its way to me (I'll post photos as soon as it arrives). Now I think the other will become available for sale, and if sufficient interest is generated, there is a possibility that Tom will allow the present two to breed before seperation and generate sufficient progeny to fullfil whateverf customer demand is expressed.

This may never become a regular production option, at least I doubt it. So, if you have lusted for a hotdog of your own (so to speak), and now have or are anticipating the purchase of a #9 (Lie-Nielsen or otherwise), now is the time to make your wishes known.

But for me, I must come up with another obscure item I really want so Jennifer and Tom and I have something new to maintain a running joke about. But for now, HotDog!!

I thought on a hotdog too since I laid my #9 the first time on its side on a shooting board. Saw one in G. Hacks Handplane Book. I thought to make one myself, so please post a photo, when it comes to you. And tell us about it.

>Craig,

Sorry for not recognizing one had gone your way. I had heard there were only two and assumed that mean two manufactured and not two left. Congratulations on getting the first. That implies you've been waiting a very long time, indeed, as I know my request goes back many years now.

>Lyn,

I'm sorry about breaking the old rule of "ladies first". This is a long story. Actually I have been waiting a long time but I never hit Tom over the head with it. I got a luke-warm response so I thought about making a limited production run with a friend of mine and about that time I heard about Chris Schwarz's reproduction hot dog. Chris was gracious enough to give me his source and as luck would have it, the fellow had one left. He wanted $100.00 (man, I really must have wanted one bad). To make a long story short, I wasn't satisfied with the quality so I returned it. I talked to my friend again about manufactuing and then we decided I would give Tom one more little nudge (he's set up to make this kind of stuff, we're not). His response was exceptional and within a month of that phone call I am now enjoying my time at the shooting board.

For those that are interested, it is machined from solid aluminum and is black powder coated. It is attached from the inside with a hex head set screw. Tom even provided the allen wrench. The black is kind of a radical departure from the good old nickel plated hot dogs that we've come to know and love, but it feels warmer to the touch and ergonomically, it's great. I'm happy and I assume that Tom is in the process of breeding more of these little puppies right now. Sure wouldn't hurt to ask. BTW, I have no idea what they are going to sell for. All I can say is if you have a L/N #9 and you do any shooting board work...try it, you'll like it. Believe me Lyn, it was worth the wait.

Best wishes,

Craig

>Lyn,

Sorry about that. I've never posted here before although I've known Ellis for a long time. I lurk on several sites from time to time and I guess I got you mixed up with ALF on the Traditional Tools site. It's late, what can I say. If I get a chance to meet you in the future, I owe you something. You can pick your poison.

>Oh, it's quite OK. It was a source of amusement. Having an ambigous first name has its advantages too. FWIW, I once suggested to Rob that ALF was likely male. Of course Rob (Robin)can relate to this as well.

Glad to have you posting.

>Lyn,

Thanks for taking it easy on me. I still owe you one. Also learned a lesson...don't post when you're semi-delirious.

Best,
