My sword steel japanese chisel is sure sharp

Steve Knight

>I think it has been two weeks since I sharpened it but a slip and I cut a 2cm gash about 1/4" deep or so in my hand just past my thumb pad.

not sure how I did it as my hand was not inline with the chisel I don't think. I think then the pice popped off easier then expected my hand rolled into the blade. but who knows I was the only one there (G) sure bled all over the place. I did not think it would stop and it just cut off after a few minutes of pressure.

glad I could get a ride to the emeregancy room. I would have had a tough time riding my bike there (G)

well it sure killed the rest of my day.

>Steve, my sympathies, I rival Roy in getting cut, my wife just shakes her head when I come running upstairs from the shop. I am now convinced that the project god requires a blood sacrifice for each of my projects......and he usually gets it ;-)

>Steve,

I knew you'd put your knowledge and your sweat in my new dovetail plane, but your blood?

Sorry, just kidding

Hope you're going fine and it wasn't my plane who did you that.

You call that a cut?

Bob Hackett

>Why back in the winter of `02 I cut both my legs off and had to drag myself 10 miles uphill thru the snow to get to dry wood I could cut to build a fire to heat my knife and cauterize the wounds.Would have bled out while waiting for the fire if I hadn`t buried myself in the snow and ambushed that bear so I had something to eat to build my strength.

Slather on the Bag Balm, wrap it in a shop rag and get back to work you slacker!;^)

Seriously,I hope you heal well and quickly.Folks are waiting on those new planes.

>(G) I will make it. it just makes gripping things painfull. and of course I have to do a lot of that this week. now the hard part keeping the sawdust out (G) it was a new style panel raiser that got me. I hope it did not get too dented when I dropped it.

>I can relate! I missed my fingers but went across my knuckle. Four across the top and two deep inside.

What chisels do you use for your work? I should have checked those out when I got to visit last year.

>hurts don't it? (G) mine hurts more now then before maybe I will get a picture.

I have 5 chisels in all. that one was a 1" japanese sword steel made from white steel from misugi designs it was about 120.00 I think. I have a real spendy one for it's size 1/8" from japan woodworker and one of the lower cost from them in 1/2" that does not get a lot of use and a 1/4" of the same. that gets lot of use. and a long 1/4" chisel that gets some use.

You had a knife? Luxuary!

Steve Kubien

>Back in '98 I dreamed of having a knife. With both legs gone and a broken arm, I too dragged myself uphill for 10 miles through the snow. I managed to light a fire with the glare coming off my bald spot! I didn't have a knife so I had to heat up my own teeth, get 'em hot enough and cauterize the wounds!

You had a knife? Spoiled brat!

Runnin' and duckin'....

>Maybe for a day, but the thumb pad has LOTS of nerves to complain for a long time. I actually found closing the wound to staunch bleeding more painful then the cut, I attribute that to a sharpened chisel.

The novacain was MUCH more painfull than the cut, or the pinching of the wound. But I took all the tools home! :)

Would you buy the less expensive Japan woodworker chisels again? I have not yet decided on a set of bench chisels. I found the lie nielsen to be a bit too pricey, but I would have them for like 50 years you know. The Iyori's are often mentioned as being an outstanding value at around $35 each. Highland hardware sells them for a nice $200 set.

thumbs are bad for sure.

I don't know if this hurt or it was the shock at first.

when the lady scrubbed it I about flipped. but I didn to even feel the shots.

the white steel and blue have been fine. they just don't hold an edge as long as the higher end chisels. but it is still al ong time compared to any other chisel I have used.
