Help Identifying Spokeshave

Steve Evans

>Hello everyone. I picked up a box of misc items at an auction last week that included a couple of spokeshaves. One of them was easily identifiable as a Stanley 54. This one however has no identifying marks on it and I have had no luck tracking down a picture that's even close. Any suggestions on where to look, or even better, what it is.

Thanks

Hey, Steve, we're good but not that good

>A picture would help, Steve. Does this qualify as "oops?" No big thing...we've all done it. I'm famous here at work for sending out e-mails in which I refer to an attachment I haven't attached....

I could have swore that I saw a picture there

Steve Evans

>after I posted it. I'll try again. Ironic seeing as it's right above the post on posting pictures.

>Yup, it's a spokeshave.

Sorry. I have NO idea what it is. Maybe when Todd Hughes finds this thread, he'll know.

I like the straight-handle shaves, so it may make a good user...

>If you can get a copy of Tom Lamonds book on spokeshaves you might find an answer or if you find Tom's e-mail address he might help you out. He is a member of the Midwest Tool Collectors and sometimes has adds in the Fine Tool Journal and others when selling books. I'm sure he would not be too hard to find. If I think about it at lunch I will try and find his address.

>no marks on the blade? it looks like it is unpainted or japaned? if so it might be a patern makers copy of some one elses shave.

>Ernie

Nope no visible marks on the blade. It appears that it was japanned at one point, as there is just a bit left in a few protected areas. I guess it'll just go into the tool cabinet for a little bit, and see how it works. Thanks for the help guys

Spokeshave Identified!

Steve Evans

>Thanks to Eric Hedberg, the spokeshave has been identified as a Seymour Smith and sons spokeshave. Mine obviously has a replacement blade due to the lack of markings on it.

Gratifying, isn't it?
