hand plane review

gordon thomas

>Thought you mght ne interested in a comparison of three hand planes by woodworker and woodcarving magazine from England. The "woodsmith" compared the clifton, Ln and LV no4's. He rated the clifton the most comfortable to use, LN a close second for comfort and the LV the least effective on oak. His three main crticisms of the LV are the vertical handle and the resulting inabilty to apply pressure towards the end of the stroke; the lack of room for a person with large hands; and the quality of the plane iron. If nayone has seen this review and disagrees with my posting I am always willing to be corrected.

take care,

Gordon Thomas in Sunny Calgary

>And what is your review? You have to take most commercial reviews with a grain of salt, since often the reviewer has vested interests in one company or another, even if it's only free planes.

>Sounds like The Woodworker and Woodturner. They've only recently merged into one magazine and their website doesn't seem to have caught up. That's a surprise...

>You might check Barnes & Noble. They had that issue on the shelf at the B&N I go to. I was intrigued by the article but scared off by the cover price, $10.50 (ouch!).
