>As close as reasonably possible (in past threads on this, people have mentioned 4" spacing on their benches), because (a) you don't have to spend as much time opening/closing the vise, and (b) you want as much of the stock on the bench as possible for stability.

>You also want to take into consideration your vice travel. Mine only opens 7 or 8 inches. Since ithe vice was shorter than my bench is thick I had to add a block with a dog in it. When I got finished I had about 6 inches of travel left. So my dog spacing is 5 inches.

>I made my bench with a 6" grid of 3/4" diameter holes. It works well for larger stuff clamped with the end vise, but it's often wider spacing than I'd like for smaller pieces with the side vise. I'll be adding a few holes between the others for use with the side vise.
