How would you use them to hold 1/4" thin stock for planing?

I have been using LV ones, and plastic Rockler ones. Really, I have come to think that shopmade ones like you have are a good choice for planing.

Round dog folks have a tougher time, but wood should still work.

All wood 3/4 in. dowels with aquare hardwood top

as William Duffield explained earlier.

The dowel tops are kerfed and wedged.

This also avoids having the handplane go over the end of the board and into the bench.. Somewhat of a wood buffer.. They also have a larger bearing surface for the wood being planed and easily adjustable in height.

I also use the same wood bench dogs in the bench jack shown.

I made sure NOT to fix the damage on my plane until I:

1) Threw away the bench dogs

2) Made wooden replacements for them.

I have never missed having metal dogs. I have square ones on my bench, and made wooden replacements that have a wooden "spring" that keeps them at the desired height. Works like a champ.
