>I thought that I'd invest in some good chisels this year and was wondering if there is any difference between the 2 Cherries and Hirsch firmer chisels. They both come in 6 chisel sets with a comparable prices.

2 Cherries Firmer Chisels in a wooden box from European Hand Tools $130 CAD: short length; light pattern; beveled edges; with a wooden handle; 6, 10, 12, 16, 20, 26, 30mm

(sorry the picture also has two of their smaller chisels that are not part of the package)

Versus the Hirsch Firmer Chisels at Lee Valley for $124 CAD in 1/4", 3/8", 1/2", 5/8", 25/32" and 1"

>I have read that there are no differences between the Two Cherries and Hirsch brands. Exact same chisels, different names. I don't own either of the brands but it is just what I have read somewhere.

>I have the Two Cherries chisels. The reason I chose them was because they have a much wider range of sizes than Hirsch. I also think they are a better chisel. I am pleased with mine.

>Darin,

I bought that set of Hirsch chisels from Lee Valley some time ago; I also have a set of Two Cherries mortise chisels that my lovely, understanding, generous family gave me for my birthday some time ago. I too have been told Two Cherries and Hirsch chisels are identical--except for the handles and decals--but I don't know for certain if that's so.

I had a chance to look at a set of Two Cherries and Hirsch chisels side by side, and the steel parts certainly looked the same and felt the same--for whatever that's worth. Even though my sets are different types of chisels, used very differently for very different jobs, I can make a couple comparisons:

The steel in both is excellent. It takes a very fine edge and holds it a good long while. As far as I can guess, the quality of the materials used is equal.

Both are serious tools. They are robust and hefty; you can almost feel their superior quality just picking them up. And as an aside, the blades of both were coated with some %$&#ing lacquer that seemed to be the same on both brands--at least lacquer thinner easily removed the %$&#ing stuff.

In short, I am thrilled with both my sets. I can recommend both brands without reservation. I don't think you can go very far wrong with either.

"Same Production Line"

Chuck Nickerson

>Be careful about assuming "same production line" means same quality. There are a number of case studies documenting that OEM work can be lower quality than the equivalent home brand.
