Hollow & Rounds

>Following up on an earlier post on 0-1 and A-2 steel for planes. I have read Whalen, Roberts, and Armour on making molding planes. None give a standard for wedge width. I would assume when going from a #2 to a #24 the wedge would get progressively wider. Any ideas on what the common practices of the times were? I only have #8 and #10 to use as a reference.

>Doug,

It's my understanding that the wedge should be 1/3 the width of the handhold.

>I'm not sure there is (was) a standard, except that bigger ones were bigger and smaller ones were smaller. Usually. I just measured some VERY large Greenfields, and they vary from 9/16 for a #128 (8 inches) down to 1/4 inch for a #16 (one inch). However, the 48 hollow (three inch) is 5/8, while it's matching round is 1/2. I looked at several Doschers, and they vary from about 1/8 inch for a #2 (1/8 inch) up to 5/16 for a #14 (one inch, I know, I know - you go tell Doscher is should be #16!).

>One text states the handhold should be 2/3rds the width of the plane. The rabbet would, therefore, be 1/3rd the plane width. The book does not state, however, at one point in the set of hollows and rounds does the rabbet start i.e., a number 4.

On mine

>They are pretty much the same because the tangs are uniform. My theory is that in a production shop the wedges were made up in bundles and fitted to the plane with the iron. That says that they should be the same on a matched set of H&Rs. I will check tonight and verify.

And mine

>Jim, I was just about to say the same as you. All the tangs on my H&Rs are exactlly the same size. Only the blade section is different. Therefore the wedges are the same as well.

Regards from Perth

(PS How are those blades coming along?)
