>I just received this tool from LV and have been playing around with it. I have two questions. First, among the hardware is a large flat washer, a long regular head screw and a nylon spacer. Nowhere in the instruction book can I find mention of these pieces. Where the heck do they go? They do not even seem to be in the appendix!

Second, just how true and flat does the disk spin? Mine wobbles quite a bit. Is that normal? I've futzed with it and can't seem to get it level.

First answer with LV/V is usually to call their customer service dept. which is great. They'll either walk you through the problem, or if it's not fixable, send you out a new part right away. If you can't get your platter to run flat, sounds like something's very wrong.

As to the parts you mentioned, I'm not at home and am thus doing this from (rather dim) memory, but I think the things you mentioned are to be used if you put a stropping wheel of some kind on the machine. The spacer, longer screw allows you to use something that's a good deal thicker than the enclosed platters.

I'm sure someone who really knows what they're talking about will chime in shortly. Tony

As to the wobbling of the platters - mine absolutely don't do this. I'm not sure of the tolerances, but my unscientific evaluation is that they are pretty darned flat. I don't think if they were uneven or "bumpy" that the quality of sharpening would be as high as it is - and my results have been wonderful.

>The "extra" parts are so that you can mount a felt or other wheel which has a 1/2 inch bore. There has been a page in the manual in the past which references this, and I suspect one is still hidden in there somewhere. The felt disk, charged with honing compound can be handly for honing carving tools. You can also use these parts to mount lapidary lapping disks in the same way, though you lose the calibrated angle settings with the thicker disks.

As for wooble, there should be virtually none. Most likely your platters are not seating properly, (I assume this applies to all your platters) but if not that, then some part is seriously amiss and you should spend some time talking with customer service to troubleshoot it or return it if you bought it locally.

>Hi Rich -

The plattens on these are assembled on the shaft and then turned flat...there should be little vertical flutter - if any.

Since there are concentric rings in the casting - it may appear to wobble when turning with no platter in place (the rings move side to side) - but this is a visual effect only...

Cheers -
