Which Plane to buy...help please!!!

Rob Hix - King George, VA

>Hey all,

I went Sunday and bought a belt sander to smooth some panels I had glued up. Well yesterday, I almost ruined one of the panels. After a break I returned to the shop to smooth the other paneal and I saw my block plane laying on the bench. I picked it up and gave it a whirl. Not only did I not ruin the panel, I did it ten times faster.

So, now I am going to take the belt sander back and put the money into a smoothing plane. This plane will be mainly used to smooth a panel after glue-up. I will be buying from Lee Valley. My dilemma is whether to get the low angle smoother, the #4, or the #4-1/2. Could someone please help me in making this decision.

Also, if you have any other suggestions as to what planes to target in the future, I would greatly appreciate you help. I doubt that I ever fully replace my power tools, but working with hand tools is becoming more and more attractive to me. I love not having to wear a dust mask, and with hand tools I get a good workout and can still enjoy hearing the birds sing.

Thanks in advance,

Rob Hix

And then....

Christopher Schwarz

>Rob,

From your list of three, I would choose the low-angle smoother. It has fewer moving parts, it's easier to set up and much easier to modify. FYI, Veritas is coming out with a wider and heavier version of that tool in the coming months that you might want to consider if you're not in a hurry.

And after that plane, how about....

>Thanks guys,

I am not in a hurry as I have not got a decent bench yet. That is my next shop project. I was leaning toward the LA smoother, and since I am not in a hurry I will wait for the heavy one. The workbench has to come first, or the plane is no good to me.

I love the workout that planing gives me when I really get into it. Plus, I need the exercise.

Everyone have a great weekend,

There are wicked evil men on this forum

>that will lead you to the path of financial ruin. We should have rules about the pictures posted here. Some of these pictures go to our base behaviors and induce lust and loss of reason. I would call them pornographic were they not "art". That said, the advice on the LA Veritas planes is great and by the way, Wayne, could you get some posters printed up at Kinkos so I can put one up in my shop. Hey did you see the tote on that one ;-) Eric (on his way to another cup of coffee)

>Rob,

My smoothing plane's a #4 1/2. It has a high angle frog (50) and it has weight. It's a Lie-Nielsen. I honed on a secondary bevel, so I have an actual cutting angle of about 55. It works great for smoothing figured wood, not only because of the cutting angle, but because of the heft too. Planing above all panels, I would even consider take a #5 1/2 with the same setup.

I have an LA smoother to, but it lacks heft, when smoothing difficult fiber. Advantage: You're free to change the cutting angle as often as you want. For my part: I'm too lazy to hone another microbevel each time it is required.

>All of the content from that issue has been recycled from previous issues of PW. It's sort of a "best of" issue around a theme. If you have a subscription, chances are you already own a good portion of the content.

If anyone has any specific questions about the projects in the issue, ping me offline and I'll be happy to help.

I assume you mean a back bevel, right? (For the uninitiated, this makes a bevel on both sides of the iron, assuming I'm right in my assumption Marc meant a back-bevel.)

>How big are your panels, and how flat are they now?

Personally, I think the LA Jack from Veritas is a best first plane, at least for me.

I have to flatten things more than I might with a shorter plane, such as the forth-coming LA heavy smoother, but that's all right. The longer plane makes it work pretty well as a jointer on shorter boards and the extra heft is nice too.

IMHO, the Jack is the place to start, esp since the LA Heavy isn't out yet. By the time you're used to the jack, the heavy will be out and you'll be that much farther away from financial ruin so you can get it right away! :)

Cheers,

Greg

Re: You're right

Marc in Luxembourg

>Greg,

I meant a back bevel. Sorry, I translated from my language without checking. A standard bench plane iron has one bevel with an angle of 25 to 30. As you add a bevel on the back you have automatically 2 bevels, that's why we call it secondary bevel.

Cheers,

Marc

>I second Greg's suggestion. The jack plane can be tuned to produce as smooth a surface as a smoothing plane, but it's longer so will render a flatter surface.

But, truely, what I usually suggest to start out with is a smoother(#4 or 41/2) AND a jointer(#7). (my personal preference is Lie-Nielsen). I use both planes equally often in my shop. The smoother is handy because it is small and maneuverable, and the jointer is essential for flattening your new bench top. I also use the #7 on my shooting board. Specificly, the 4 1/2 smoother shares the same blade as the jointer, which makes set up and sharpening simpler.

>I would think about the low angle bevel up planes if I were at a point to start over again. and to confuse you options there are several other good plane makers out there besides LV some cost more LN and some cost less Steve Knight, Clark& Williams Ther are some Canadians making infill planes. Buying planes Grass Hopper is a path we must all take on out own. If you wonder to one side or the other to far people will think you are extream. Tread Carefully! Quich some one give him a push!

>As I sit here contemplating which definition of "need" you are using, and noticing that in only about a day and a half, your photograph has been looked at and probably drooled over well more than three hundred times, I come to the conclusion that if everyone who said, under his breath, something like "Yeah, I NEED one of those!" actually ordered one, you might be finished building all of this week's smoother orders by the time you are a hundred and thirty. Of course, you deserve all the business you can get.
