$1600 plane!!

Jack Guzman from Maine

>I just returned from a small local auction. The majority of items were clock parts and dolls. There was a table in the very back with four or five cardboard boxes of rusty tools on it.I ment through all of them. I saw a few interesting brace bits and some plane irons. There were four planes. Two transitional smoothers in fair condition,a woodie jack also fair and a #6 size metal plane. It had a wavy groove pattern on the sole,a tapered iron(no chipbreaker)and instead of a lever cap the cap used a screw to hold the iron.I didn't think much of it ,it was pretty plain looking. No numbers or names on it.However ,it was requested up early and the bidding was quick and fierce. It sold for $1600 .Which left me wondering. What did I miss?I didn't buy anything. I didn't bother waiting to see what the transitionals went for.Wayyyy out of my league----Jack

>I guess some times ignorance is a good thing. If I had been aware of the identity of that plane before bidding started, instead of being surprised at the price,I probably would have felt alot worse.

Did the winner do ok? Seems to me that the winning bid borders on the actual value of the thing.---Jack

>At $1600 it certainly wasn't a bargain. Must have been several people there that knew what it was. The only time I ever pay less than full value for planes at auction is when there is no-one else there that knows tools. Normally, they will go for ebay prices or higher in this area if there are a number of tools at an auction and a number of tool guys. If there are tools with parts missing or in bad shape I can usually get them cheap though, and use the parts.

Yes and No

>The plane I saw was definitely a Rodier. It was a bit longer than that one and the tote looked more like rosewood where yours looks to be apple or some other lighter wood but the sole markings and all mechanical features were identical.

The main problem with this auction was that there were two people with knowledge of the plane's identity so the bidding got out of hand. They went back and forth til the other guy quit at 1600.I think they both heard about the plane beforehand and came just to acquire it.There were no other tools.Just a couple run of the mill transitionals and a box of drill bits and files like you find at any garage sale. This auction was about clock parts and dolls.---Jack
