First handcut dovetails

Mike-in-ovetiHavertown

>Hello all,

I started down the slippery slope alittle bit ago and wanted to share my progress. I am taking a class in working with hand tools and our first assignment was to build a drawer with through and half blind dovetails.

Well what do you think?

>They are structurally sound, which is most important. Elegance and other subtleties will follow, with more practice. I still have days where mine look much worse, and I do them all the time. I would offer a couple of suggestions. First, either use the other end of your Warrington pattern hammer for assembly :^) or keep a bench brush on the bench and use it fastidiously during the fitting process.

Not too shabby...

>Great job!

The toughest thing about hand-cut dovetails is that first set. Even if you feel that your dovetailing might not be quite ready for a juried show, you've got to admit that the joint is heads and shoulders better than a rabbet and some brads.

>Not bad for your first dovetails. Take a few swipes with a good hand plane and watch them look even better.
