Using a striking knife
John Pappas
>I have never used a knife to mark cut lines. When accuracy mattered, I used a sharp #3 pencil. However, there has been so much lately about striking knives that I have been motivated to find out what I may have been missing. I have tried three different types, one that has a wide knife on one end and an awl on the other, a thin blade knife, and a thick blade knife with a steep bevel. Each produces a different line. Can one of you avid striking knife users elaborate a bit on what defines the ideal line and why. Is it a thin one that is hard to see and requires the use of chalk? Is it one created with a steep bevel (thus a bit wider mark) that creates a thin facet that makes the line somewhat easier to see? Do different situations change the requirements? I suppose I need to see one of the masters at work.
Thanks, John
