LV Shopping Cart problem

Pam Niedermayer - Austin, TX

>Hey, Rob, the quantity modifier in your shopping cart hasn't worked for a couple or three months. I'm trying to buy some hardware; and the only way to change quantities is to remove them from the cart and reorder from the item page with the modified quantity. Is it me? I use a Mac (OSX 10.3.6) and Mozilla.

Thanks,

Pam

>Hi Pam -

I suspect it's your computer... will pass your config to the IT guys to check. We did convert the last of our code to .net about a six weeks ago, so it may be related to that.

Will get back to you!

When the title is "HEY ROB LEE" it is almost always a matter that is best handled outside this forum.

And perhaps we could address all the other off-topic messages here that have gone past without your comment?

Here's the answer I got...

Rob Lee

>Hi Pam -

Am posting this here in case others have a similar issue, but here's what IT staff have to say....

Hi Robin,

We have downloaded Mozilla browser on the Mac (OSX 10.3.2) and tested our site. Through our testing, we were unable to reproduce the problem.

There are a couple of scenarios which may be happening.

The first (most likely), is that a popup blocker may be blocking the Modify window from opening. By default, popup blocking is enabled within the Mozilla browser that we have tested on. We are currently working on a fix for getting around the popup blocker issue. For the time being, to disable the popup blocker in Mozilla, the user can follow these steps:

1. Click on the FireFox menu item

2. Select Preference

3. Click on the "Web Feature" item on the left

4a. Remove the checkbox on the "Block Popup Windows" item

or

4b. Click on the "Allowed Sites" button beside "Block Popup Windows" and enter "www.leevalley.com"

One other thing to note with the Mozilla popup blocker is that if you click on a link that tries to open a pop-up, there is a menu-bar that appears at the top (just below the address bar) which reads "FireFox prevented this site from opening a popup window. Click here for more options...". When clicking on this menu-bar, the user is presented with the option to "Allow popups for www.leevalley.com". There is also the option to disable this menu-bar. If the menu-bar has been disabled, then the steps listed above must be performed to re-enable popups.

The second scenario that may be happening is that the Modify window is being displayed, the user is able to enter a modify value, and the Shopping Cart page is not being refreshed properly after the user clicks the "Update Cart" button. If this is the case, then the user should be able to see the updated quantity by clicking the "Refresh" button on the browser. A couple of other things to test with this scenario would be to modify an item from Purchase Later or from within the Wish List manager to see if the same thing happens.

Hope that addresses it! (geez - they're good!)

Cheers -

Rob

>It seems to me that LV has an owner interested in woodworking, which is probably good for a company that makes woodworking tools. If that person continues to have the time to respond to questions asked on this forum, then questions will be asked, and even aimed directly at him. I don't really see what the issue is; if he doesn't want to respond, there is nobody holding a gun to his head and making him. If he doesn't respond, the questions will stop; it's very simple science. I was interested in Pam's experience, and slightly broadened my understanding of something I had no knowledge of yesterday. I imagine if someone else is experiencing a similar problem in the future they will know what to do.

>I always enjoy any posts having to do with Lee Valley. Pam's right too about others maybe having the same problem and Rob's usually very responsive. Lots of sharing going on here on all sorts of topics. Hope it isn't stifled. As for OT stuff I enjoy a lot of that too. I tend to think folks like to ask most anything of woodworkers as, for the most part, we're so downright polite and open. Not so with some other dedicated forums. Maybe also because most woodworkers are not one dimensional in their pursuits. Also don't remember Ellis complaining and he's paying the bills.

>David,

I think that anything that's relevant to some aspect of woodworking that our fellow (sorry Pam) members find interesting is a proper subject. Considering the number of posters in threads directed to Rob Lee, I'd say folks are interested. From the number of posts here I'd say even things like Pam's question are of interest. Wouldn't you?

It happens with predictable regularity around here that a thread is, or with every succeeding post becomes, an advertisement for Lee Valley. Apparently folks around here are interested in where they can find good quality tools, at reasonable prices, and with excellent service. Pam's question clearly (at least to me) falls into that category: a vendor's on-line ordering system, and problems associated with it, are reasons why someone might choose to buy from a particular vendor; and people around here are obviously interested in that kind of information too.

Besides, "help me!" posts are the staple around here. Quite frequently the help needed is with computer problems of one kind or another. The responses in those threads too show that people are interested--at least they're interested in helping out another member. It's just plain nice that people are so eager to help one another. So why restrict the opportunities to help? as long as it has some connection with our favorite pastime. And, it makes perfect sense to me to go directly to someone who is most likely to be able to help.

My half-penny's worth (my thoughts aren't worth more than that)

>the problem resolved on line. I was interested. As far as the flame from David, sure didn't know Ellis had hired any new moderators. Don't know why people want to decide how WC is used. As far as I'm concerned Ellis has done a very great job producing and keeping this site open, I have been a participant for several years (long before the Pond drained), I liked WC better than the Pond then, don't think anyone needs to try to make it different.

>Sure, the solution was that Rob and staff were essentially correct. I had no idea that Mozilla took the popup blocking as the default. Specifically, it says "unrequested popups." Well, I was requesting a popup, just as I did for ordering the item to begin with, as well as looking at tech sheets and instructions. It didn't make sense to me that modifying the quantity was an unrequested popup. Still doesn't, but when I turned off the blocking and/or added LV to the exception list, it all worked fine.

BTW, moderators are not hired, or at least Forum Moderator is not a paying position at WC.

On the other hand...

>...time Rob spends answering IT- or shipping-type questions is time he doesn't spend with the Veritas tool development staff.

Also, a precedent has sort of been set that Rob will personally answer LV questions on all the ww forums he participates in so now it is almost taken for granted that he will respond to any inquiries.

IMO, Rob's interaction with the ww community about tool design and un-met tool needs is time well spent. Interaction about clerical issues another story.

Mike
