Stool Opinions

>Well I have decided that I would like to get an adjustable height rolling stool for the shop so when I need to bend over and work on something I can just sit instead.

:)

I don't plan on making one so I'm out looking for one..

I have plenty of examples online but what I'm wondering is this.

I have the option of buying a drafting chair instead that would offer the same heights and would roll.

I would gain a back as opposed to the stool but I would have a more difficult time storing it out of the way when not in use.

So is the back on a drafting chair worth it or is the stool sufficient?

Does anyone else have a stool/chair etc in their shops? What are your opinions/likes/dislikes?

thanks!

>I have an adjustable height rolling drafting chair in my shop, and I don't like it. I like the adjustable height feature well enough, but the rolling is more of a PITA. The problem is, unless you only use it while you're doing layout or drawing or something gentle like that, a lot of what you're doing at a bench involves pushing or pulling. And Newton's 3rd law sends you skittering across the floor every time you do.

I eventually bought an el-cheapo wooden stool with no adjustments and no wheels, and I like it a lot better. YMMV.

>I have 2 stools in the shop one a short automotive type with rollers and a tray. What I did was drill a hole in the tray and hang it upside down from the ceiling when not in use on a hook.

>Lee Valley sells hardware (complete with plans) to make a simple height-adjustable piano stool. I plan to go this route and have already purchased the hardware. The plans are quite simple, but you could easily modify them to accomodate different styles, including a back. The basic plans are for a stationary stool...no wheels...which is probably the most efficient design for use at the bench!
