anyone used Bahco chisels?

Bob Fawcett

>I found a set of 7 on the web for $50 at a surplus outlet.

Are they any good?

Description says "Bahco Chisels, made in Sweden, hardened to HRC58-63, over 2/3 of its length. Red Beech wood handle."

Look like about a butt length chisel.

Sizes are not specified but the picture looks like maybe 1/4" through 1" or 1 1/4".

Bahco, A E Berg and Nooitgedact

Derek Cohen (in Perth, Australia)

>Bob

I have no direct experience with Bahco, and am just as curious as you. Their lineage is Royal, since Bahco bought out Sandvik, who bought out A E Berg, which I use and like.

Incidentally, several years ago (on Badger Pond) there were recommendations for Nooitgedacht chisels. These were cheap (I bought a set of 8 chisels from 1/4" - 1-1/2" for around $30 on eBay - are they still around?) and surprisingly good (although I just use them for rougher work). Steel was Swedish (the point of this comment) and handles were Dutch (but the splitting image of AE Berg handles !?), and one has to wonder if the steel also came out of the Bahco factory? Any thoughts, anyone?

Regards from Perth

Don't have the Bahco

>but I do have most of a set of AE Berg. There might be a better chisel out there, but I'll never know because I like the Berg so well.

>I used to have a set of Sandvik chisels which are now Bahco. They were crap. The edges would chip and roll with just a few wacks of the mallet. This was after I spent MANY hours lapping out the heavy machining marks on the backs. I don't think the quality is anywhere near a good vintage E A Berg. I know a full set of chisels for a cheap price is tempting but in this case you'll get less than what you pay for.

>I bought a set of the Bahco chisels on eBay a while back. They are the ones with the red plastic handles and the shark logo. I beat on 'em pretty good in coco and ebony, and have had no problems at all. They hold an edge extremely well with no sign of edge roll or chipping at all. But my Marples blue chip on the other hand are real crapola...anyone want to buy a set of them *really* cheap??? Wayne

>Wayne,

If they have the red plastic handles and the shark logo, they are closer to the Berg quality than the current Bahco quality. I have some of the older wooden handle Berg chisels and a set of the red plastic handle Berg chisels. These are of comparable quality. I would rate them as my best chisels, better than Two Cherries. I also have a couple of newer Swedish chisels, one Bahco and one Sandvik. These newer chisels aren't as soft as new Marples chisels, but they are nowhere near as good as the old Swedish chisels. I'd put them somewhere halfway between Two Cherries and new Marples chisels.

>Bob,

I bought a set of six chisels on eBay, which sound very similar to that description. The same seller also had sets of seven that came with a leather case. You could search for them under Bahco chisels if you would like to see a few more pictures.

I can't give you a much of a review yet because they just showed up in the mail and my 'other job' is keeping me too busy. From a quick inspection I'll pass on a few comments:

I would not consider them to be butt length. They are fairly tall - maybe 10" - with moderately thick handles. In some ways, they are more similar to the feel of a set of firmer chisels I have.

Straight out of the box, the edges are good but not great. They are square with a uniform bevel but will still need some work to remove the milling marks. Still, better than most of $10 chisels I've seen.

Other questions?

>I have a set of these and have been very happy with them...Actully mine is a mixed set of Sandvic and Bahco; I can't tell any difference between the two. They seem to be a little bit softer than the Two Cherries my father inlaw has as they sharpen easier. They hold an edge well and I have no reason to upgrade.

Hope that helps,

Dave

>Here is the set. They are about 2/3 of the way down the page on the left, or "find on page" in IE for "bahco".

They look decent, but its hard to tell from a picture.

this firm has been bought by another company: Irwin (see www.irwin.nl). And they still provide a complete range of Nooitgedagt chisels, but under the new name.

Hello Rob

Wiley Horne

>I would much appreciate your perspective on the following, to the extent you can speak to it in public. When Newell-Rubbermaid starts rolling up all these companies, killing the jobs and trading on the brandname (the main thing apparently that survives), is there operating sense to it? Or is it pretty much financial bean-counting involving balance sheets and quarterly statements? It's hard for me to believe that a better product is ever created by these roll ups.

I have a couple of Record vises that are just excellent, and I hate what happened to the engineers, mechanics, and workers for that company, who, after all, were the ones who built the brand and made it worth ripping off.
