Tapered reamers for Winsor style chairs

Eric Hedberg

>I'm about ready to bite the bullet and get a tapered reamer for a windsor chair project and need some help from the hand tool experts here. I'm familiar with the Clifton (haven't heard much good about it) at Highland Hardware and the one manufactured by Emhof(sp), but is there another alternative? I've been holding out hoping someone else would put their CNC lathes to work and punch one out (You know who you are) at better cost/quality value, but I'm finally giving up. I don't use tapers on my legs, so this would be solely for bows and spindles. Has anyone here tried commercial reamers for this? Thanks for the help. Eric

>Hey, Eric -

You've probably seen this, and I haven't made one yet (holding out for the Emhoff, too), but John Alexander has plans for making a tapered reamer. Also, I've always wondered if it'd be possible to find one of the cheap fluted machinist ones on eBay with the right taper and use it for chairs. Thoughts?

BTW, what's the philosophy behind using a taper on spindles and bows but not legs?

Scott

>Scott, I have seen that site. Thanks for the link, though. I don't plan to taper the legs mainly because I have some slick fixturing from my Welsh stick chair builds. It works so well, I don't want to mess with the tapers (I'm still getting the hang of using a lathe). I do see some real advantages, though, asthetically and practically to the tapers in the other components. Eric

>I've used both the Emhof and the one from Highland Hardware. Don't even bother with that Highland Hardware variety as it is worthless. The one from Fred Emhof is top quality and therefore the price reflects it. Also I thought that in one of my newslwtters from the Windsor Institute that they had another one they were recommending that they were having made. You might check out their website. www.the windsorinstitute.com.

>I got one from J&L Industrial Supply. It is a tapered reamer primarily for metal working. I have used it on a drill press, but it would work nicely for a hand drill. If you are interested, I'll post the part #.

>Scott,

Just from the top of my head, if the legs were tapered, they would act as a wedge everytime a person flops on the seat, so eventually would split the seat. Again, this just pop up when I read your question, no research or study behind it.

>Gosh Eric... you want us working on everything at once??? :) (the hint wasn't THAT subtle)

We'll have 'em to match the spindle/dowel cutters, when you use the tapered tenon blade...

>This is a tapered reamer 3/8" to 1", I got it from J&L. I have used it for chair mortises for Windsor chairs for the stiles and for the legs.

It is an Alvord Polk tapered reamer 3/8. Manufacturer part # 653021.

I thought I'd been over every square inch of the LV site, but I know not of these. What tapered tenon cutter/blade? (and good on ya' for a reamer to match. . .whatever it's matching. . .).

Dave

P.S. For some reason, the search function on the LV website doesn't seem to pick up the power tenon cutters when you search on "tenon", "power", "cutter", or "chair". Makes them a bear to find unless on knows to look under "drilling" in the index (great tools by the way).

>Hi Dave -

The reason you can't find them is that they're not yet available....they'll be along later this summer... They're cool though....and will be very affordable...not that they're designed, we're working on the reamers...

I'll pass on the search terms request to our web group!

>The Windsor Institute reamer is the same as the Emhoff reamer, with the addition of a ~1" X 9/16" Dia. pilot on the tip. This reportedly helps with keeping the reamed hole the same angle as the drilled hole. I have both, and have only tried the piloted one once, and that was on a stool I made out of a piece of firewood too nice to burn... -so I'm not ready to comment on their relative worth.

The pilot tip can be removed (cap screw). I'm not sure what the minimum diameter is- seems like it is exactly the same as the Emhoff reamer. (They're at home and I'm not or I'd measure them for you.)

Thanks

>The piloted tapered reamer was featured in the most recent issue of The Windsor Chronicles, which is The Windsor Institute's quarterly publication. I just checked, but they still don't have this tool up on their Web site yet (http://www.thewindsorinstitute.com). I ordered mine by calling them directly (603 929 9801).
