Cold weather and tool tailgating

Dave Caudill

>Well while not the norm it is 65 and sunny here in the greater Seattle and surrounding areas. I hear tell this is not the case for the Damascus Maryland area where it is wet and cold and rumor has it there is some sort of tool event going on. As much as I like tool events I'm not sure that 5:30 in the morning and chasing tools is what I want to be doing. I'm thinking the rest of you should stay home as well and leave them there tools for another day. This of course has nothing to do with my being 3000 some odd miles away and unable to convince my wife that going to Damascus is a socially and culturally redeeming endeavor. And I'm not the type of guy to bring others down just because I'm having to miss an event that is one of my favorites.

Okay, okay you go ahead and go, Todd, William, Joe and the rest of you. My only request is that if you see something I like get it for me. I'm good for the cash you guys know that.

I was on the phone a couple of hours ago talking with Tom Law and he made it a point to rub it in a little bit. When he picked up the phone and I told him who it was he asked if I was in Maryland or not. When I informed him I wasn't he couldn't understand why. Other than maybe the weather. Then he went on to tell me he had visitors and they weren't doing anything other than talking about old saws. Natuarlly I told him I was glad I wasn't there wasting my time on that such nonsense. But knowing he isn't one who likes the cold I made sure to tell him it was sunny and 70 and had been for months. Global warming had made Washington a destination vacation area.

Tom said he was going to be at the show as usual and he would have a lot of good, sharp working saws. Nothing too fancy mind you but very good useable saws. And of course the prices always are pretty good. Not much for backsaws it sounds like although he said he found a nice Simonds backsaw that he might have done by then. Make sure you stop by and let him know its sunny and warm in Washingotn.......State.

You guys all have a great time at the show. It sounds like its going to be cold so wear your longjohns and mittens. And most of all make sure you report back on all the great tools you come across at the show.

Dave

>I called my friend Joe monday to remind him that this sat. was the PATINA. We joked that maybe this year it won't be so cold as the weather Monday at the time was sunny and warm ,[about 55-60].Tuesday was about 20 with a snowstorm and high winds! I have already put my gloves in the old Blue Shark Tool Truck so I won't forget them...As always hope to see you all there and make sure to come up and say Hi....I'll be that good looking fellow wearing the WWII womans auxiliary cap with a star on the top ....Todd

>Sorry you won't be able to make the trip east Dave. I will miss the inside information on Tom's endeavors. I will keep you in mind when I hawk the tables for the #39 in 1/4" (maybe 3/8") or a nice #79. I have a few gaps in Stanley 720/750 bench chisels too. Do you have a want list?

I am dreading the weather...latest report is 30's to 40's...ugh.

Looks like the $15 early entrance to the firehall may be money well spent:-)JR

>LOL at your missive from the Pacific Northwet!

I'm sorry you won't be there, Dave. I'll be looking for cryogenically treated blades, noses and toes.

Joe is right. $15 may be money well spent. The tailgaters may be few and far between, and the tailgates may be drifted shut. I thought it was cold last year, but still refused to spend the $15 to get inside early.

Latest weather forecast for Damascus: Friday night: Cloudy with rain and snow showers. Low 31F. Winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. Chance of precip 30%. Saturday: Becoming partly cloudy later with any flurries or snow showers ending by noontime. High near 40F. Winds NW at 15 to 25 mph. Chance of snow 50%.

At least the forecast has improved markedly since earlier in the week, when they were predicting an onslaught of Polar Bears. Neither rain nor snow nor global warming...

>Well Joe I appreciate you asking. I suppose we always have a wish list. Mine usually includes chisels and saws. I do need a 1/2 Everlasting chisel to fill out a set. So if you see a good one and have an inclination I'd make it right with you. I also try to pick up any of the blac handled everlasting with the orange logo form the 30's. But they were short lived and don't seem to be too common. Again if you find a can full of them someone wants to get rid of I'm your man.

Funny thing is I always go there with a list but leave with all of these things that never crossed my mind prior to the show. You always run into those oddities or just gotta haves that you didn't even know existed before they show up on one of the tables.

Sorry its not going to be sunny and 70 but then if it was the stories wouldn't be nearly as good afterwards. Have a good time and good luck finding those hidden deals.

Rust shopping

>This is, of course, a variation of what most guys laugh at most women about - go into the store with a list of four items and leave with a shopping cart full.

I've been to one and only one tool sale of this type at a local Woodcraft, and I came back with a Stanley 51 (hardly necessary since I already owned a 52 and 53, but the price was SO GOOD), and three Jorgensen c-clamp-type holddowns, one of which I sold to Matt Curley, again at good prices. Didn't find the bullnose I went looking for, and certainly not the $15 Spiers smoother I fantasized about.

>No pic unfortunately but you could pick him out from across the room!

Beautiful morning cold but dry. Knew about 15 or 20 vendors and/or shoppers there. Great time!JR
