FIREWOOD-II & Purpleheart/Maple Console

HC Sakman

>First of all; Thanks to William for hosting these pix. in his web space.

The 1/8" bead (made with #45's 1/8" bead cutter used as a scraper.)around the top is curly maple, as well as the feet and the supports for the top. I am not really a fan of purpleheart, but this mottled grain figure and color, I find exceptional. Top has a different color due to sanding up to 600G. It'll be fine after seeing some sunshine. There's only one coat of oil on it.

Legs are bevel-tapered so they have that twisted look. (note the orientetion of the feet at the floor)

All these 3/32" thick 8 pieces were fitted with the help of a shooting board and LV LA Jack.

Thanks again Sir William!

>That is some mighty fine work Chico. How dod you attach the maple feet to the purpleheart legs? Dowels? Also, what is the top of the second table made of? It's got fantastic grain and musta been a bugger to work on?

bevel-taper?

>Hi,

I am looking at those legs, but somehow I am not grasping their shape ... or if I do 'get' the shape, then I'm mystified as to how it's accomplished.

Would you enlighten us a little more on the design/construction of the legs? Am I correct that the faces of these are now a series of triangles, alternating point-up and point-down?

And, I was one of those who asked for more pics of the 8-piece table top when you first posted it, and now I see what you mean ... Thanks!

>Gotcha, nice job there Chico. I sure do wish that was some other wood than Purpleheart. It is one beautiful table, I could only imagine what it would look like in some other species.

>Hi Clay,

I'm going to write an article about the legs. I've received many e-mails asking me the same question.

Thanks.

>Top of the second table is spalted curly maple bordered with ebony string inlay. It's unusually dark for Western maple.

Curly maple feet are glued to purpleheart legs with glue, that's it. I've been doing this for ages, no failure yet. I make sure that both sides (end grain, right?) are well covered with glue and when it gets tacky in a few minutes, I apply little more then clamp it. I find screws are pain to deal with and also they tend to leave one or two side of the joint open, weakining the joint line.

Thanks Steve.

>Floating top is screwed through the maple (there are square purpleheart buttons are inlayed into the maple's end grain) stretchers placed towards the center.
