Chisel ID?

Scott in Douglassville, PA

>Hey, all -

As the only thing ruining my perfectly nonproductive weekend, I turned a new cherry handle for an old 1/8" socket chisel I picked up on eBay a few years ago:

I got to wondering if anyone could ID this chisel for me. I've never been able to find any maker's mark, but the original handle is pictured, and appears to be oak.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Scott, running out of piddly turning projects in Douglassville, PA

>Hi Scott,

I can't help with the ID, but I think you did a great job on the handle.

Pretty chisel. Pretty handle. Great sacrifice

>VERY nice work, Scott. Wish I could help on the chisel maker, but I can't.

At considerable sacrifice to my self-esteem, I would be willing to send you some of my chisels to make handles for, if you need more piddly turning projects to distract you from your other work.

>I don't know wha they are, but that handle you made is an absolute beauty. Makes the chisel a work of art.

>Looks like a very attractive and well made handle but looks more like a handle for a carving chisel then one for a Mortice chisel which is what this chisel looks like to me,[i believe these narrow ones are called sash morticers].In my experance most of these mortice chisels have a heavier handle with a leather bumper on the end like the original one did at one time so they will stand up to use better esp. if struck with a mallet....Again a very pretty handle just don't know if right choice for this type of chisel .....Todd

Nice handle dude!

>That turned out great! The chisel looks a Witherby I have. It has an oak handle with no leather washers though. Maybe mine had a replaced handle.

Nice job!

>I had a PS&W that looked like that. Like Todd said, it's a mortice chisel.

Thanks, guys...

>I appreciate the comments. The chisel needs a bit of work yet, but at least I feel like I got a decent deal on it ($6 with the shipping).

Thanks for the input.
