My First Homemade Plane

mfitterling in Lake Wales, FL

>Here's a pic of a Krenov-style plane I just built over the weekend. This is my first attempt at building a plane and I found it to be pretty simple. I followed the instructions found in The Fine Art of Cabinetmaking.

I'm not getting nice thin curlies yet, but I still have to do some tweaking to the mouth, etc. It has a Hock iron and chipbreaker and is set at 55 degrees as I find myself using curly wood more and more often and I thought I'd see how this would handle it. Made of a block of Zicote with maple pin and wedge. I may replace the maple pin with a brass rod to give the shavings more room to escape, but am not sure yet. I'm going to give this style a while before I change anything.

>Nice first try - I'm going to try to make one soon for the very same reason ... figured woods are too tough with conventional planes
