>The DMT 3"x8" course bench stone has impressed me this weekend. Previously I have used scary sharp to take the nicks out of plane blades or chisels, which takes a LONG time.

I was able to completely redo the bevel and remove all the nicks in under 8 minutes the first time I used the stone.

The real reason I bought it was to flatten a water stone flattening stone (there is an oxymoron). I had previously spent about an hour or more with sandpaper. The stone was devestating to wet dry paper, removing the adhesion to the paper in a mere minute of two.

With the new diamond stone, it was flat in about 2 minutes, and the back of the stone in about 3 mintues. who hoo..

Think I might buy the next grit up now too to help flatten plane irons.

>You may be surprised how quickly the diamond stones go dull and stop cutting.I know I was.

I now use the rather high priced stones as a substrate for diamond paste.Sad to say that in hindsight I would have just gone with the paste on cast iron or more recently plastic substrate and saved a whole lot of money.

Bill Tindall has been a big help in sorting this out for me.Check the archives before you give up too much cash.

>I agree save the diamond stone for other jobs than flattening the backs of plane irons. Where I think they are really handy is flattening the backs of thin chisels and flattening waterstones.
