Two questions: Stones and Drills

Pat Wheatley from Montreal

>Hello everyone, I have two quick questions that shouldnt tax the collective brain too much.

1.Stones: I am in need of a stone for course work, flattening chisels and plane blades and doing the rough work to remove nicks and other blade issues. I already have two water stones, the starter set from LV, the 800x and 4000x. I was wondering if I could go from the 200x straight up to the 800x if yes I will just buy the 200x. Or should I go with the much more expensive option of a DuoSharp diamond stone with the 220x and 325x grits. If I go with the 200x stone I will also buy the grit and glass to keep all of my stones true.

2.Hand Drills: I have been given an old eggbeater style hand drill with two cogs on the shaft. Last night I was trying it out for the first time with a relatively small twist bit in soft wood (pine). No matter how tight I turned the chuck it always came loose as soon as I start drilling. Is the drill broken; is there anything I can do to fix this problem?

Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Pat

>I have allways been told to not skip grits. I basicaly use the same set up as my grandpa a two sided oil stone and a translucent whit stone. I'm sure that you can get a blade sharper than mine but really how sharp does it have to be? and drills I like them the two jaw don't work as good on the smaller bits you might try a larger bit and see how it works. what ever you do do not take it apart and try and clean it that way unless you are an aliean with 6-15 handes as there are little springs discs and the jaw. and putting it all back and screwing it back together is realy no fun. it it does need cleaned use a can of wd40 or carburator cleaner sprey it into the jaw twist it back and forth sparw some more worke it some more spray one last time let it all drain out and dry and oil it with a light oil 3 in 1 or what ever you use on you oil stones. if you use lamp oil just pour some in a small container and let the head sit in it over knight after working it a few times.

>I go from a 200x diamond to 800x waterstone routinely. It's possible it takes a few more seconds, but I'd buy an 8000x before I'd by an intermediate between 200x and 800x. Besides, you don't make the 200x to 800x transition very often, only when you're initially shaping/lapping a blade.
