Anyone have an extra Compass Plane?

Doug Trembath

>Folks, I used to have an old metal base compass plane which would adjust for concave and convex profiles, many years and many moves ago. It didn't make one of the moves, and I find myself wishing for one. I searched Ebay, but didn't see what I'd like to have. I know the old workers aren't extremely valuable, so I wonder of some of you old rust hunters might have an extra one on hand, and might take pity on a guy in old tool heck.

I really liked the way it worked, and have some projects on hold in my mind until I can obtain one. I'll pay customary price, and maybe throw in one of my woodturnings for good measure in appreciaton of the favor.

Contact me at above address without the spam block, and we'll talk.

Thanks,

Doug Trembath

>Not quite sure what you are looking for if it is not one of the 12 or so on eBay. There are basically two patterns to the metal ones, The Stanley 113 and the Stanley 20. Both are well represented on eBay right now.

Try the following search link

>In an email, it was pointed out to me that they are also known as Circular planes. My search on Ebay this morning wasn't as fruitful as yours. I just used Compass plane, and got four hits, three of them wooden, and one Stanley collector type. As I told my new best buddy, I'll have to bone up on the vernacular a bit. I'm relatively Ebay deficient, as well.

Thanks for the help!

>You can allways go to blood and gore and get the plane numbers that will also help in you searches. I know what you mean about not being able to find what you want some times. try doing it when you don't know how to spell!

Record also made one... *LINK*

Christopher Fitch @ Memphis

>It's called the 020

I have one I picked up on clearance from Grizzly (of all places) right before Irwin bought Record.

The link is to a completed auction for one on Ebay

There are a couple out there on EBay right now...

Ted Owen, Pittsburgh

>Doug, the preferred model generally is the 20-1/2, according to Patrick Leach. The Record offering is based on it, which was smart.

Benefit of that design is you don't hold the adjusting knob while using the plane and thus risk changing the setting inadvertently. But you can if you wish, of course, change it during the cut.

Wish I had one you could try out. Sorry, it's on my list.

Best, Ted

Record also made the 0113

Scott Burr in Ben Lomond CA

>Their version of the 113, very rare though. Ted has a good point about the differences between the two. One more little tidbit...The No. 113 can make a tighter radii than the No. 20.

>Ain't it amazin'! The amount of good natured assistance you can get on WC is incredible! Now I know almost all about a plane I used to have and use, yet I didn't really know much about it at all. I still hope someone comes up with an extra, 'cause I am, as I said earlier, Ebay disadvantaged, or handicapped, or just plain dumb, whatever.

Again, thanks bunches for the help, guys!

>Ernie, we must be kindred souls, I swear! Thanks for the commiseration. I just don't feel the need to get all involved with Ebay, although it seems a guy can spend a lot of time and money once he gets dialed in there. Oh! Oh! See why I choose not to? ;>)

>Lots of people who post on eBay can't spell accurately, or at least not consistently. When you are looking for something, it helps to be creative in the spelling department. If you need to find the real bargains, you have to try all possible combinations and permutations. I think misspellings, and the skill or luck in finding kewl, cheap stuff in spite of them is one of the main reasons some hand tool forums forbid or frown upon the mentioning of open auctions.

www.m-w.com can be a lifesaver.

Do you have any ideas about why you aren't much good at spelling? I ask, because my son, who in many other ways is a lot more intelligent than I am (about 20 IQ points), has as much difficulty as you do. Any insights would be beneficial. In my case, I just work hard at checking and double checking, but still sometimes errors get through the QC. I figure that typos don't count, because my fingers can't spell, especially if I have the lights turned off. They get through sometimes too. A simple proofread, before hitting the "Post Message" button, usually catches most of my typos, unless I'm in a hurry.

>Doug,

If you're kind of ebay-handicapped, try this one. It's pretty new, made by Kunz, a german brand. I know, you wanted an ole' rusty one, but on new stuff you can get your own marks on.

Have a good day,

Marc

I'll answer that last question.

>I'm dyslexic and put letters in before others. I also have big fingers and tend to double strike or miss the intended key all together. I also don't know how to spell I'm not good a memory stuff skipped school that year. And last and probably most important am lazy. I hope that helps with your son's training. I don't even comprehend English and grammar. It all makes no sense to me. HTML is pretty much the same. SO I typed this copied it into word and found 13 mistakes.

Doesn't matter

>Sometimes grammar, punctuation, or spelling errors can jump out, but in the long run, the only important thing is whether you get understood;-) This ain't classical literature that we are writing here, so who cares as long as it makes sense.

(Still trying to train my keyboard to spell;-))

spelling/proofing

Clay C in Miami

>I don't have any tips on why spelling and smarts seem to have no correlation, but I was a proofreader for a living back in my misspent youth, and I do have one tip in that arena.

After checking for content, one good way to catch spelling errors/typos is to read each line backwards (i.e., right-to-left). When we read left-to-right, our brains often automatically correct errors to get to the content - but backwards, it's perceived as just a string of random words, and any misspellings are much, much easier to catch. (Naturally, this won't catch homonyms like through/threw, but will catch typos [at least ones that don't happen by chance to form another word].)

Clay

PS - Being a proofreader was the most thankless job I ever had - the polar opposite of working as a floral delivery driver (which was the most thank-full). As the proofreader, if everything that went out was 100% perfect, the work was utterly invisible - but ANY error, of any kind, meant I'd blown the job they were paying me to do.

>I don't think you're being lazy, Ernie, You're just being economical with your time. I understand what you write, so perfection for the sake of perfection is a waste. Don't worry about not understanding the spelling and grammar rules. They were mostly made up at random, anyhow. Thanks for the feedback.

Why is it that when LOML says "Your other left!" to me or Ross, she's always right?

Re: Anyone have an extra Compass Plane?

Actually she`s incorrect.

That is all I have for you at this time, properly execute the facing movement of your choice and move out smartly.
