Fitting Tenons (long)

>Esteemed Residents of the Quiet Side Of Ellis Island,
Greetings:
Having just spent a coupla hours cutting tenon and rabbet shoulders and one tenon (in soft pine, no less), I come to you humbled, with hat in hand and begging to bask in your light and avail myself of your wisdom. Please ! ? ! ?
You see, I need to make this stand for my elecktrickerical drill press. And, the tools with tails are either not set up or working as they should at the moment; so, says I to myself, "Self! Why doncha chust use somma dem hand saws to cut dem tenons, etc." And Self did!
Now the dp table is to be made up of legs from pairs of 2x4's that are rabbeted on their inside faces to a depth of 1/2" and a width of 5-1/2" to form pocket mortises that will hold tenons cut in the ends of rails made of 2x6's. There's rails top and bottom with stretchers between 'em, doncha know.
Miracle of miracles, Self didn't screw up on the layouts and cutting the shoulders of the rabbets and tenons was all accomplished in about an hour without no bench, just a leeddle biddy foldin' sawhorse. When it come time make the rips, Self, he jus' clamped them boogers upright to a horse leg.
Next the big ole 8 tpi Disston (that I got at the community flea a coupla months back for 2USD) came outta the till an' ripped one tenon and two rabbets. What followed was . . . well twern't atall purdy, doncha know.
THOSE WITH CARDIAC CONDITIONS OR PREVIOUS HISTORY OF PALPITATIONS OR THE VAPORS SHOULD NOT READ FURTHER!!
OK, I warn'd ja!
When I slid that tenon in the pocket mortise nothing fit and ever'thin' wobbled around like the groun' in HaHaFornia! Fact is, the inside faces of them 2x4's wouldn't even meet with the tenon in place. That big ole Disston ripper had done wobbled where it would and nothin' was plumb and square.
Next, the 1" Blue Chip that I can see nose hairs in came outta the rack. It pared things down where they looked a leeddle better, but still nothing to take pichers of, if you know whutta mean.
Twas then I 'membered the little modern Stanley block plane (the only block plane in the kit) an' it was dug up from its resting place, an' with some fettlin', them rabbet faces and tenon cheeks got nigh onta presentable.
It bein' well past bed time for folks my age (an' me knowin' when to quit -- well, at least so fer t'nite), I left Wellenough all by hisself alone an' hied my self to this here 'puter.
One joint down an' only seven more to go! Ain't so sure I'm cut out fer livin' on the quiet side of this here island.
Anybody got advice for this neander wannabe 'bout how to make that ripper D behave hisself?
With Highest Regards and GREAT ADMIRATION, I remain Respectfully Yours,
BobH
