Backsaw question

Dean Lapinel

>I picked up a yard sale item. I'm hoping for some additional information.

This is a backsaw with a 28" saw blade....quite a heavy saw. The blade is marked "THE FULTON SAW, SPRING STEEL, HAND MADE,

HAND.....(illegible)" Pat date cannot be read.

It has around 12 tpi..finely set and shallow.

Why such a large saw? Is there any background info I can read about this company?

I can't imagine it's Sears related if it was truley hand made.

>There was a Fulton Saw Co. house brand sold by Sears. I believe that the Fulton line consisted of planes made by Stanley, Sargeant and others, chisels maybe made by CE Jennings, and other tools by other manufacturers for Sears with the Fulton brand name.

From Erv Schaffer:

"Phil had inquired about a "Fulton" Miter Box saw, and wants a "Fulton"

Miter Box.

Phil: "Fulton Saw Co" was a model name for one line of saws sold by

Sears, Roebuck & Co after 1895. Sears acquired the Fulton Saw Mfg Co in

Boston at that time and continued using their name and saws made there at

least to 1910. They then sold the factory to United Hardware & Tool

Corp. So you're probably looking for a Sears sold Miter Box of the same

vintage as well. I don't know if Fulton made miter Boxes, or if Sears

continued to make them after they sold out the Fulton factory."

The late Bob Nelson wrote about a Fulton Saw Works:

"A.F. Brombacher & Co. (note added "B") worked at 29&31 Fulton St. in NYC

(note not in a city named Fulton). They were dealers who marked tools

made by others. They claimed 1760 as an established date, but that was

undoubtedly the date of some other company they succeeded. This name was

not used before some time in the late 1800s and continued until beyond

1922"

>OK sorry but I am really curious about this saw, it's length, it's weight, so I found additional information.

It states "hand made, hand fi.., hand set"

I've attached a photo.

>You could try to raise the patent date with sandpaper on a wooden sanding block and do a search on DATAMP or the USPTO.

>Did some quick research. Now I understand...I didn't know that miter saws were so large.

I am Not likely to find dimensions to make a replica box I guess.

>I have a 30" saw 6" deep for a miter box. They usually have guides that they run in.The saw is too heavy to operate freehand but you want the weight for ease of cutting. I'd like to see what the box made for that saw looked like.---Jack

I have a couple ....

Michael R

>I have a couple of miter boxes similar to the ones shown, that I would gladly sell. One is a Stanley, originally bought in 1952 with a Stanley branded Disston saw that came with it. The other is made by Hempe MFG, probably in the late 60's just before electric miter boxes came out.

If you are interested, I'll post pix & prices. Or just Email me.
