New Bench ideas ( a bit of a gloat)

Jeff

>I was asking about benches and have lots of ideas from members here. I was/am leaning toward a shaker style bench with doors and shelves inside the base cabinet like pictured here.

Then I bought this vice on Ebay.

I think it was a bargain. The screw would cost more than I paid. Plus there is something special (to me anyway) about using an old tool that some craftsman years ago used.

I want to design my bench around these two. I have decided on a SYP top for two reasons. One, I can plane it flat when I need and I can't necessarly plane a plywood or MDF top if it is not. Second because it is readly available and fairly cheaply.

Also, I want to incorporate this sliding deadman into the design.

I am not to sure if this is going to work with the shaker cabinet. Wondering if it will always be in the way? Anyone have any thoughts on combining all these ideas?

>I've seen pictures of a sliding deadman on a Shaker bench. The sliding permitted getting into drawers/doors, as you could slide it out of the way of the one you needed to get into.

Leg vises are nifty tools.

Leg vise

>I like the looks of that leg vise, assuming the lower horizontal piece attaches on the left side of the leg (vs running into a middle slot). This would make using the vise much easier, could just use a foot to make adjustments.

Norm Vandal's Bench

Jeff Schmidt (KY)

>Jeff,

In Scott Landis' The Workbench Book there is a bench by Norm Vandal that is of the Shaker style complete with bathroom vanity underneath as well as a sliding deadman and a legvise. Sounds right up yor alley. There are plans in the back of the book for his bench.

>Howdy Jeff!

Unless I'm having another bout of CRS, I believe you can make your board jack so that it not only slides in tracks top and bottom but such that it can be lifted out and stowed, too. The pressure on the jack is mostly downward; so if it's sized right it can be lifted up into the upper track, spun and lifted out of the bottom track, and you oughta be able to remove it. I think that's how they were put in the old Shaker benches with cabinets in 'em.

Can't remember zackly where I saw or read about this, though. Maybe someone else will remember.

Jim Shaver - Oakville, Ontario

>Hi Jeff,

I went through the same concerns when I was looking at designs for my bench. In the end I went with the tradional shaker bench in the Landis book, minus the doors, all drawers.

I still am working on a dead man, but I made my slot and rail for it so it could be lifed in and out if it was in the way, much like a sliding patio door.

Take care,

Jim
