Curved iron question for David Charlesworth

>I've been practicing diligently using the instructions given in your sharpening and planing videos, as well as your F&C article collections. I'm new to this type of careful handplaning with the purpose of producing a polished surface.
I've struggled to get clean results when attempting to smooth samples of Douglas Fir. I get tearing of the fibers in the lighter colored, softer part of the grain structure. After much labor, it ocurred to me to try a hardwood species; hard maple. Perfect results. Beautiful gleaming polished surface.
Then it hit me. You refer to honing angles for hardwood. Not only that, I'm using a LN 4 1/2 with *York pitch*.
It occurs to me that this may not be the optimal setup for softwood species.
Could you provide me with some guidance for getting optimal results with softwoods? Indeed, it would also be beneficial to have you describe the general set of priciples that you apply when considering the planing of an unfamiliar species.
Many thanks in advance.
